So, did anyone get in on the great fare to Grand Cayman last week? I contemplated it but have vowed to slow down our travel pace, especially with our eldest starting Kindergarten… Anyway, now I’m kind of wishing we did… At least for a long weekend…
Chase has come out with an updated offer on their Marriott Rewards credit card. The bonus is now 70,000 Marriott Rewards after spending $2000 in the first three months after opening the card. You also get one free night at any category 1 – 4 Marriott property (not a lot of properties in those categories that you’d likely aspire to stay at but it could be useful for a random stay at some point). And the annual fee of $85 is waived the first year.
How is this relevant to Grand Cayman you ask? Is there a Marriott in Grand Cayman? Why yes, there is! The Grand Cayman Marriott Beach Resort goes for 40,000 Marriott Rewards per night. That’s pricey and on face value appears that the credit card bonus would only get us one night. But, if both people in a couple apply for the card, that gets you 144,000 Marriott Rewards between the two of you after meeting the minimum spending (you can transfer Marriott Rewards to a household member in pursuit of a redemption only). If we then add 16,000 Ultimate Rewards to our Marriott Rewards account, we now have 160,000 Marriott Rewards – enough for 4 nights! Can we do better still? Yes, we can! The Marriott Rewards program gives you the 5th night free when redeeming for 4 nights!
So two people signing up for this card and transferring 16,000 Ultimate Rewards to the Marriott account gets you 5 nights free in Grand Cayman. To be fair, I’ve never been to Grand Cayman and certainly haven’t been to the Grand Cayman Marriott Beach Resort but the trend on Trip Advisor seems quite positive (I never trust individual Trip Advisor posts but I do trust the general trends of what folks have to say). And I’ve never heard anybody say anything negative about Grand Cayman. It is definitely on my list of “must visit” in the Caribbean.
If Grand Cayman isn’t your destination of choice, you could also replicate the same idea and stay for 5 nights in Ko Olina, Oahu like we did this past December. Both the JW Marriott Ihilani Ko Olina Resort and Spa and the Marriott Ko Olina Beach Club require the same amount of Marriott Rewards. And always check the Marriott Pointsavers for even deeper discounts.
Anyway, it’s a pretty great sign up offer and can be “hacked” to make it even better. That said, has anybody been to Grand Cayman or the Grand Cayman Marriott Beach Resort? I’d love to hear your thoughts!
